If you are in need of someone to watch over your dog while you are away from home for more than a day, you have likely considered using a dog boarding facility. Boarding your dog is easy and provides your pet with an abundance of activities and non-stop care in your absence. Here are some steps to aid in preparation for an extended stay.

Get A Complete Evaluation Beforehand

Before you bring your pet to a boarding facility, it is best to make an appointment with your dog's veterinarian for a complete assessment. This way, if there is a problem that requires treatment, it can be handled before you need to go away or postponement of your trip can be made if necessary. During this appointment, be sure to inquire as to whether your dog is in need of any vaccinations. Consider obtaining parasite prevention medication for your pet at this time as well.

Take A Day To Visit A Few Businesses

If you haven't boarded your dog at a facility in the past, you will want to venture over to a few businesses to check out the space allotted for dogs, the amenities offered to them, and the staff that will be tending to them. Contact a few services in advance to set up tours so you have plenty of time to take in the scenery and ask questions of those staffing the facilities.

Make Sure Your Dog Is Up For The Stay

Some dogs do not fare well when they are placed in situations where they feel vulnerable, alone, or confused. If your pet is not the social type, or if they tend to become anxious when they are away from you, you may want to consider hiring someone to come to your home. Alternately, sign up your dog for a few training sessions where other dogs are present. This gives them the chance to frolic with others, increasing their desire to socialize. Training sessions also provide your dog with the opportunity to engage with humans other than yourself.

Gather A Few Key Items Before You Leave

Your dog will feel at ease if there are a few items they use regularly at home. If they have a favorite food or snack, bring some along to give to the boarding facility to provide to your dog during their stay. If your dog uses particular bedding, have it freshly laundered and ready to bring along for their stay. Toys are also useful as they will give your dog a form of entertainment between socialization time with other pets.
