Owning a teacup puppy is a lot of fun, and tiny puppies quickly become beloved family members. But, adding a new puppy to your home also comes with responsibilities, such as training. For most new puppy owners, the first order of business is house training to help ensure that puppies know to toilet outside. House training a teacup puppy may seem overwhelming at first, but being consistent will make the process go much more smoothly and quickly. If you're bringing home a new teacup puppy in the near future, use the following tips to help house train him:

Consider Crate Training

Before you bring your new teacup puppy home, it is in your best interest to purchase a small dog crate. Dogs are naturally den animals, so most puppies and dogs enjoy spending time in their crate. They are also much less likely to use the bathroom inside the crate where they sleep. It is a good idea to keep your new puppy in his crate for a couple of hours at a time when no one is home and at night. However, it is important to remember that teacup puppies have very small bladders, so they should not spend an extended amount of time inside their crate.

Take Your Puppy Outside Often

If you want to successfully house train your teacup puppy, you need to take him outside several times a day to use the restroom. Your puppy should always be taken outside immediately after you take him out of his crate. You will also need to make plans to wake up at night to give your puppy a bathroom break. The more opportunities that your puppy has to use the bathroom outside, the less likely he is to have accidents inside the house.

Give Praise

Teacup puppies are naturally lovable and eager to please their owners. While working on house training your new puppy, using praise and giving rewards can be highly effective. Each time your puppy goes to the bathroom outside, make sure that he knows how happy you are by giving him pets and praise. It is also a good idea to reward your puppy with treats for a job well done. He will then begin to associate going outside and going to the bathroom as something good that should be repeated. Just make sure that you give your puppy very small treats that he can easily chew.
